The Department of Public Safety, in partnership with the campus community and within the framework of the university's mission, is dedicated to creating and promoting a safe, secure and peaceful environment by applying policies and laws, delivering emergency services, performing requests for assistance, and providing on-going education. Planning is important to meeting the challenges of any emergency planning. This Public Safety Quick Guide (PDF) includes processes and terminology which may be used during an emergency. Terminology is important when there is a situation that impacts your safety. Whenever these terms are used in an emergency situation there will be “plain English” instructions and details to supplement these terms.

Technology @ UST
Visit Information Technology Services New to Campus web page and be sure to check out the teaching and research technologies available for all faculty. This video orientation series focuses on academic technology at the University of St. Thomas for new members of the UST community. IRT provides training opportunities for faculty and staff and are publicized by direct email or through other UST communications.

Assisting Troubled Students
Faculty and staff members at UST have the unique opportunity to engage directly with students and can often identify those who are struggling. To support staff and faculty efforts, the UST Cares web site has helpful, practical tips about assisting students most effectively and referring them to others when needed. Please take a few minutes to also watch the video "How to help a student in distress."
Offices and Departments
Dean of Students: It's important for UST faculty to know about the Dean of Students Office because it is an advocacy office for undergraduate students. We can either answer any question a student might have or get them pointed in the right direction toward an answer. Faculty should know about resources for assisting troubled students and the Faculty & Staff as Helping Resources document.
Two resources of interest for faculty are the UST Cares document (PDF) which includes resources and information for a safe and healthy campus while striving to prevent violence and the overview about the Dean of Students office.
Disability Resources: It’s important for UST faculty to know about the Office of Disability Resources because we are the office responsible for coordinating and leading compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. We are responsible for providing all classroom accommodations for students with both visible and non-visible disabilities. We are partners with faculty as they work to offer equal access to their students with disabilities.
International Students & Scholars: It’s important for UST faculty to know about International Students & Scholars (ISS) because ISS can assist you in improving cross-cultural understanding on campus and how best to work with international students.
Institutional Effectiveness: The mission of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness (IE) is to provide leadership in academic planning by developing, integrating, and disseminating information to be used in evidence-based decision making processes at the University of St. Thomas. In addition, IE assists university committees, academic programs and administrative services with information for assessment and quality improvement initiatives.
Office for Mission: It's important for UST faculty to know about the Office for Mission because the mission defines who we are as an institution. St. Thomas is considered a "mission-driven" institution in this way.
