Safe Space/Brave Space Planning Workshop
Join Dr. Lucia Pawlowski for an overview of "brave space" and to learn techniques to build anti-oppressive classrooms. This workshop is open to all faculty.

The Safe Space/Brave Space workshop is part of the Inclusive Classroom Institute and is open to all faculty, adjunct and full-time, whether or not you intend to pursue certification.
A boxed lunch will be available or you may bring your own if you prefer.
Originating in anti-oppression social movements and then adapted to classroom settings, “brave space” goes a step beyond “safe space” by acknowledging that students and professors have to take big risks to talk about power and privilege, and these risks are especially significant for marginalized students in our classrooms. The brave space classroom requires us to bring racist, sexist, ablest, or homophobic views to the surface in order to confront them--in ways that challenge those who have expressed these views, and empower other students, especially marginalized students, to intervene.
The workshop will include a brief overview of the research on brave space. Faculty will gain techniques to help us as professors build anti-oppressive classrooms in which we manage the risk of airing and intervening in oppressive views, and foster in our students an ability to constructively confront these views in the classroom, transform their own views, and build similar spaces outside the classroom.
About the Presenter
Dr. Lucia Pawlowski is an assistant professor in the English department and has used safe space and brave space strategies in her courses. Her article, “Building a Brave Space Classroom Through Writing,” is coming out in Spring 2018 in Teaching Race, edited by Stephen Brookfield and to be published by Jossey-Bass.
