Graduate Teaching Fellows Program

The English Graduate Program is proud to offer two graduate teaching fellowships.

Each Graduate Teaching Fellow (GTF) will provide support a faculty instructor who is assigned to teach core courses in the Dougherty Family College. The GTF will attend all class sessions; help grade informal and formal writing assignments; update/coordinate Blackboard and other forms of course record-keeping; lead class activities or discussions on select topics; and mentor students individually and in small groups. They will also work in the Scholars Resource Center as a writing tutor.

Each Graduate Teaching Fellow will receive a tuition waiver and a stipend of $5,000 per year.* In order to maintain eligibility, the GTF must take 5 courses/year during the term of the fellowship (including summer, if desired). The GTF must also maintain a GPA of 3.5 in graduate course work in order to remain in the position. The GTF will work at the Dougherty Family College (Minneapolis Campus) for 15 hours per week. They must also enroll in Teaching College English (GENG 507) during spring semester 2020.

Graduate Teaching Fellow positions will be awarded to current or new MA English students. Successful applicants will have (1) an outstanding record of achievement in their undergraduate coursework and (2) experience teaching, mentoring, or otherwise working with students from diverse backgrounds and under-represented groups. Experience with multilingual students and ESL writers is highly desirable.

To Apply: Submit a two-page essay describing why you wish to be considered for one of these positions. Your narrative should include discussion of your relevant experience teaching, mentoring, or otherwise working with high school or undergraduate students from diverse populations or from under-represented groups. Applicants should submit the essay to Soren Hoeger-Lerdal by November 1, 2019, along with submitted an online application for enrollment.

*Stipend is per hour and paid on the St. Thomas payroll calendar.
