The Sacred Arts Festival celebrates a specific theme each year, using a rich palette of artistic forms that include music, dance, literature, film, and the visual arts. This annual festival events offer opportunities to consider and articulate humanity's understanding of the divine. This year’s festival theme is “Origins,”  which aims to explore beginnings, ancestry, and the divine creative forces that give rise to new art and ideas.

One of the featured artists for this year's festival is poet Fady Joudah, who will explore this concept of “origins” through the lens of poetry. Following his reading, he will take discussion questions from the audience. Copies of Joudah's books will be available for purchase and a book signing will follow the event.

Joudah has published four collections of poems, The Earth in the Attic, Alight, Textu, a book-long sequence of short poems whose meter is based on cellphone character count; and, most recently, Footnotes in the Order of Disappearance. He has translated several collections of poetry from the Arabic. He was a winner of the Yale Series of Younger Poets competition in 2007 and has received a PEN award, a Banipal/Times Literary Supplement prize from the UK, the Griffin Poetry Prize, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Houston with his wife and kids, where he practices internal medicine.
