Alfred Austin (1835-1913) is widely considered to be the worst British Poet Laureate of all time. This talk will provide an account of how such an undeserving poet managed to secure such a prestigious title. Focusing on Austin's often-overlooked journalistic career and previously unseen correspondence, it will demonstrate that Austin's often anonymous support for the Conservative Party, via prose journalism in the pages of newspapers and periodicals, was the chief motivating factor behind his appointment.
This presentation will also chart the development of Austin's literary criticism, from his denunciation of Tennyson and other contemporary writers in his younger years to his enthusiastic support for many of these same writers later in life.
