Students Design Menu Reader for the Blind and Win $10,000
The creation of a menu reader for the blind, called elate., brought electrical engineering major Aaron Redepenning and entrepreneurship and finance major Katie Hasslinger a shared $10,000 scholarship for their entry in the social venture division of this year’s Fowler Business Concept Challenge.
Held annually in the Schulze School of Entrepreneurship, participating students develop and submit business concepts with potential to become viable, high-growth businesses. Entries are judged on originality, clear and compelling value proposition, competitive advantage, market opportunity and feasibility.
The product, elate., is a smart bracelet worn by a blind person that scans a sticker on a restaurant menu, then reads the menu aloud through a Bluetooth-connected device.
