Dr. Ronald J. Bennett, Founding Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of St. Thomas, began teaching in the Engineering Graduate Program in 1987. He was active in building the engineering program in the early years and in 1993 was named the Thwaits/3M Chair. The following year, Bennett was named the Director of the Undergraduate Manufacturing Engineering program at St. Thomas. In 1995, he assumed leadership of the graduate engineering programs at St. Thomas. During his tenure, he began several new degree programs, increased enrollments, introduced and developed the STEPS summer camp for girls and created the School of Engineering. 

Prior to joining the University of St. Thomas, Bennett held executive positions in industry for more than 20 years, working at BMC Industries, CPI (now Boston Scientific) and Teltech as well as in several entrepreneurial organizations. His responsibilities ranged from R&D, engineering and manufacturing to sales, marketing and general management. He teaches and publishes in materials engineering, innovation, strategy, technology transfer, leadership and engineering education. He champions engineering education reform to meet the demands of the 21st Century. He is a member of numerous scientific and professional societies, is an ABET program evaluator and commissioner, and leads the Society of Manufacturing Engineers Center for Education. 

Bennett has also served as Executive Director of the Minnesota Center for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (MnCEME) and on the boards of several educational organizations. 

Bennett received the Tekne Award for Community Leadership from the Minnesota High Technology Association and the Engineering Medal of Honor from the University of St. Thomas. He has a wide variety of academic publications, and is co-author with Elaine Millam of the 2012 McGraw-Hill book Leadership for Engineers: The Magic of Mindset
