Student Employment

Each semester (including summer and J term) students are hired for part time shifts to work as child care aides in our program serving infants through preschool age children. The majority of our shifts are scheduled between 7:30-9:30 AM and 3:30-5:30 PM. Opportunities to substitute in classrooms are available throughout scheduled hours of the program, which are 7:30 AM-5:30 PM. Child Care aides contribute to the development of the classroom environment and curriculum in daily outdoor and indoor activities with children.  Child Care Aides maintain policies and procedures as required by center and child care licensing, and perform necessary duties as part of a team in providing a safe, caring environment for young children.

Before having direct contact with children, each new employee at the University of St. Thomas Child Development Center must successfully complete a background check per licensing requirements from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. This two-step process requires the new employee to:

  • Submit to the CDC, basic identifying information which will initiate an electronic background check.  This electronic check will be conducted by the office of the MN. Commissioner of Human Services.
  • Undergo a fingerprint scan at an authorized location.  The authorized location nearest the University is the UPS store at 2083 Ford Parkway in St. Paul.  There is a $9.10 fee for this scan, which must be paid by the employee.
