A once-monthly lunchtime brainstorming session with a local social innovator or Ashoka fellow and a small group of St. Thomas students, faculty, and staff. Together, we’ll work through a “problem of practice” in the guest speaker’s field, building community around a shared concern and learning some social innovation problem-solving skills through hands-on experience.

Helping Women Become Entrepreneurs for Good: A Series, with Kristi Hemmer (Academy for Women’s Empowerment)

Co-sponsored with the Luann Dummer Center -- A semester-long series for women who want to make a living putting their passions into action. Drop-in for one or attend all four and earn a certificate. Learn more about the series.

  • Doing good is good for business, September 25, 3-4:00 PM (ASC 115, MakerSpace) -- Do you want to do good in the world? Or make money to have a good life? What if you could do both? Learn how young women around the world are doing just that with social entreprenurship. They had a social question and created a business to solve it. Add to your calendar.
    • Followed by Fowler Business Challenge workshop, September 25, 4-5:00 PM (ASC 115, MakerSpace) – Turn your idea for doing good into a viable venture by participating in the Fowler Business Challenge (see below for more details). 
  • Mind the gap, October 20, 12-1 PM (OEC 103, Luann Dummer Center) --  Do you wonder why there is homelessness? Hunger? Inequity? Do you see gaps in systems? Then join us for Feminist Friday to clarify your BIG question and what you can do about it. AND learn how women run/led businesses outperform men in innovation, culture, retention, and financial.   • Do something that matters, November 10, TBD.   It’s field trip time! Now that you’ve learned a bit about social entrepreneurship and doing good with business, let’s go check one or two out. Or learn as you go! Add to your calendar.
  • Activating the Do-Gooder: A Mini-Startup Workshop, December 16, 1-4, ASC 341 ASC 365. The future IS female. The United Nations says so. Business ROI says so. Fortune magazine says so. We know so. In this interactive conference, use what you’ve learned so far in the series and build on it through the lens of Kristi’s Social Entrepreneur mindset, to understand your potential, power, and possible. At the end, you will pitch you and your changemaking idea! An awesome way to end the semester, start the new year, and unleash your potential. Add to your calendar.
