Event Recap: The Higher Calling of the Entrepreneur

Ryan Institute for Catholic Social Thought of the Center for Catholic Studies, and the Habiger Institute for Catholic Leadership of the Center for Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas co-sponsored a lecture and reception on November 17 featuring José Ignacio Mariscal Torroella, former president of UNIAPAC International.

During this public lecture, “The Higher Calling of the Entrepreneur,” Mr. Mariscal offered his unique insight into the intersection of international business, corporate responsibility and Christian social thought, especially in light of the current economic situation. Dr. Kenneth Goodpaster, holder of the Koch Endowed Chair of Business Ethics at the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business, served as respondent.

José Ignacio Mariscal Torroella is the recent past president of UNIAPAC International and was its first Latin American president. UNIAPAC is a federation of national associations for Christian business leaders. It promotes a vision of corporate responsibility that is grounded in Christian social teaching and business practice which serves the individual human person and the common good of the world.

An architect by profession, Mr. Mariscal graduated from the National School of Architecture. He has an M.B.A. from Columbia University and he studied in the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. Mr. Mariscal is the former executive president of the Marhnos Group, which is dedicated to real estate development, franchises and construction. He also is an advisor to businesses such as Bimbo Group, Posadas de Mexico and Clidra Group. He has served as president of the Mexican Institute of Christian Social Doctrine, USEM CD of Mexico and the USEM Confederation.
