Meet the Math Placement Tutors

Arden Ashley-Wurtmann

1) Where are you from?

I grew up in Chicago. I first came to Saint Paul for college.

2) Where did you go to college/grad school? What did you study?

I majored in Biology and minored in Educational Studies down the street at Macalester. I later got my Master of Science in Education from Bank Street Graduate School of Education in New York City.

3) What are some experiences that have led you to become a math placement tutor?

I've been a teacher since 2006 and I've been teaching math since 2011. I started my teaching career as a science teacher, but I was drawn to mathematics after completing my master's degree.

4) What are some things you enjoy doing in your free time?

Well, my two little daughters keep me very busy! If I get some time to myself I enjoy visiting museums and going for walks around my Saint Paul neighborhood. I live about a mile and a half from campus, so you might see me out and about in the area. I also have recently been going to amateur painting which I have found to be a fun creative outlet!

5) What is your favorite part of helping people understand math?

I was very math-avoidant when I was young. I didn't feel comfortable with math until the very end of high school, and even then I still didn't "like" it. In graduate school, I took a class on mathematics pedagogy, and I finally understood math on a deeper level and began to appreciate its beauty. What I love most about teaching math is that I get the opportunity to help others learn to see math not only an avenue to their goals, but also as a way of viewing the world.
