Pizza provided for those who RSVP to CATHSTUDIES@stthomas.edu. The Galileo Affair ranks among the most vexed episodes in the history of the Church. The events, personalities, and ideas in conflict hardly summarize easily. What is more, ever since Napoleon first sought to use Galileo’s trial to discredit the Church, the events have taken on a meaning and their central figure taken on a martyrdom that an honest inquiry cannot support. A polarized debate has emerged. Missing in so much of the discussion are the facts of the case, and more important than that, what they mean. What is the thoughtful and faithful Catholic to make of the Galileo Affair?
