Time-to-Default Analysis of Mortgage Portfolios

Matthew Galloway, Alicia Johnson, Dr. Arkady Shemyakin (UST)

Abstract: Fluctuation in mortgage defaults throughout the country provides vital information to financial institutions and a key indicator of the state of the economy. Most of these defaults can be accredited to subprime mortgages, which are often issued to borrowers with lower credit ratings. In the most extreme cases, these defaults are the cause of economic turmoil – such is the case in the 2008 Subprime Mortgage Crisis. The intent of this research was to develop a statistical model that would accurately predict and forecast the probability of defaulting throughout the life of a mortgage.
