McGuire Lab: Research in Biogeochemistry
My broad research interests are in how microbiological, geochemical, and hydrologic processes impact the fate and transport of chemicals in complex natural systems. Chemical concentration and form affect ecosystem function and human health principally through the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. Recent projects include water resources impacted by crude oil spills, landfill leachate, jet fuels and solvents as well as "unimpacted" drinking waters such as the desert oasis in the Pahranagat Valley, the source for much of Nevada's drinking water. My lab investigates the rates of chemical fate and transport using a combination of field investigations, laboratory experiments and numerical modeling.
