Exceptional: A History of Industrial Design in the USA
2019-2020 Department of Art History Speaker Series
Date & Time:
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
O'Shaughnessy Educational Center (OEC) Auditorium
In this talk, Dr. Carma Gorman discusses her forthcoming book Exceptional: A History of Industrial Design in the USA, which is the first book to demonstrate the central role that American lawmakers and laws have played in shaping the distinctive national character of American industrial design. Rather than crediting the unique character of American industrial design to American designers’ exceptional ingenuity or to American consumers’ idiosyncratic tastes, Gorman argues that manufacturers have shaped the distinctive national character of American design by altering the forms of their products in response to the shifting constraints and affordances of US laws.
