Student Employment

Student employment is an important part of financial aid awards at the University of St. Thomas and our students earn more than $3 million in a combination of federal, state and university funds each year.

While the University of St. Thomas cannot guarantee employment for every student, we do give all students the opportunity to work on campus, regardless of financial need.

Benefits of Working on Campus

On-campus work opportunities allow the university to deliver necessary services, help students offset education expenses, and provide valuable work experiences. Working part-time on campus can help you:

  • Gain valuable work experience
  • Develop relationships with faculty, staff, and other students
  • Create a network of people who will be able to serve as references for you in the future
  • Eliminate the need to commute to work
  • Improve your grades (see article*)
  • Serve your community
  • Earn money
  • Save on taxes - students who work on campus and are also enrolled half-time or more do not have to pay FICA tax on their earnings. (That's over 7% of your earnings!)

In fact, studies show* that students who become actively involved on campus tend to be better about managing their time and responsibilities.

Find a Job

Students can apply for any posted position keeping in mind their skills, interests and availability. Postings fluctuate throughout the year.

Types of Student Employment

  • Need-based Employment
  • St. Thomas Employment
  • Need-based Employment

Eligibility for need-based employment is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and is funded cooperatively by St. Thomas and either the state of Minnesota or the federal government.

Students who qualify for need-based funds are given priority for student jobs and will have an estimate of potential earnings included in their award notice.

This estimate is based on a student working an average of 10-12 hours each week during the school year. Students may ultimately work more or less than this estimate depending on their class schedule and employer's needs.

    St. Thomas Employment

Students who do not qualify for need-based funding can also work on campus.

However, these students will be paid with funds provided exclusively by St. Thomas. There is no application necessary to be eligible for these funds.

    Required Paperwork

After a student is hired, he or she must complete a Student Employment Form before beginning to work.

This form is available on Murphy Online under the Student Services menu. When students login to complete the Student Employment Form, other required paperwork (if applicable) will also be listed.
