Loan Processing Requirements

The federal student loans you’re offered are just numbers on a page until they’re processed.

Use the following resources to make sure your funding doesn't get delayed.

Entrance Loan Counseling

Before receiving a student loan, borrowers must complete an online entrance counseling session. This interactive counseling session will help you understand your rights and responsibilities as a student loan borrower. The online entrance counseling session will take you approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

Get Started:

  1. Go to studentaid.gov.
  2. Log in with your FSA ID username and password.
  3. Open the “Loans and Grants” drop-down menu in the toolbar and select “Loan Entrance Counseling”.
  4. Click the “Start” button next to the “I am an Undergraduate Student” section to begin.

Master Promissory Note

In order to borrow a Federal Direct Loan, you must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is a legally binding agreement to repay your loan to the U.S. Dept. of Education. Completing this requirement will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Get started:

  1. Go to studentaid.gov.
  2. Log in with your FSA ID username and password.
  3. Open the “Loans and Grants” drop-down menu in the toolbar and select “Master Promissory Note (MPN)”.
  4. Click the “Start” button next to the “I’m an Undergraduate Student” section to begin.

If we are not listed in your "Associated Schools" section, select the "University of Saint Thomas" in Minnesota and click on "Notify This School." (The school code of G02345 with 2115 Summit Ave, St. Paul, MN 55105-1096 will appear.)

Periodically, on weekends, this federal website will be down for scheduled maintenance. You will be required to log in using your FSA ID. If you do not have a FSA ID, you will be prompted to create one.
