Services for Graduate Students

The Center for Writing provides support for graduate students through:

  • individualized conferences on the St. Paul campus
  • online consulting
  • the resources on this site.

For a one-on-one conference, make an appointment with one of our two graduate consultants (who are earning their M.A.s in English) or with the Director. Our hours are flexible, and we can also arrange for a series of  meetings over the time it takes for you to complete your project. Our undergraduate consultants are also highly trained to be active listeners for writing in progress.

If you have any of the following specific needs, please consider our other resources as well.

If you are:

A graduate student in one of the CAPS (College of Professional Sciences) programs, your first stop should be:
The CAPS Graduate Writing Center on the Minneapolis Campus at (651) 962-4460 or gradwriting@stthomas.edu. They provide face-to-face and online consultations.

An ESL graduate student not in a CAPS program and finding reading and writing English at the graduate level in your discipline is difficult:
Contact David Moore, Director, Academic Support Center.

Work full time and are in graduate school so find it difficult to find time to see a consultant:
Use our Online Consulting. Or find a professional consultant/tutor through our list of independent freelance editors and tutors.

Outstate and a distance learner:
Try our Online Consulting.

Writing your dissertation:
The University of Washington Graduate School provides links to a number of sites that assist those preparing to write, writing, or trying to complete a dissertation.

Writing an abstract:
George Mason University's writing center has a thorough description, as does Raensslaer Polytechnic University's.

Creating a professional vita:
Emory University's writing center provides helpful advice.

Need discipline-specific writing advice:
Check out Columbia University School of Social Work Writing Center  which also has good descriptions of APA guidelines and fantastic handouts, or Claremont University that works as a clearinghouse on a variety of disciplines.

Need an editor or proofreader:
Contact our front desk at (651) 962-5601 for names. (We do not recommend the editors but are merely serving to connect writers with professionals; we also have no idea about the fees charged.)

Considering further graduate study:
Graduate Gateway out of the University of Central Florida provides advice on getting into graduate school, writing a thesis, writing personal statments, curriculum vitae and cover letters.

Giving an academic talk:
Here is an article you might find helpful. Click here for the pdf file of "How to Give an Academic Talk."
