Our Mission

The Center for Writing:

  • promotes students' engagement in writing, reading, and critical analysis
  • supports writers as they develop their abilities to respond to others, reflect, and express their own ideas concisely and thoughtfully
  • enables students to gain perspective, self-awareness, and confidence as learners and writers.

The staff of the Center for Writing -- undergraduate and graduate peer writing consultants, an ESL Specialist, and the Director -- provide free, one-on-one conferences with writers at the University of St. Thomas, including:

Undergraduate students in their first year at UST

Undergraduate students writing in core courses

Undergraduate students working on writing assignments for "writing intensive" and "writing in the disciplines" courses in the WAC program

Graduate students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences

ESL Students developing their abilities to write using the English language

Students and Alumni writing personal statements

Faculty writing assignments for their students and working on their own scholarly writing (please contact the Director)

We also provide writing mentors to:

  • the refugee and immigrant populations in the community through the service learning component of our training course and our community-based consulting program
  • ENGL 110 courses in UST's Academic Development Program
