Marketing Communications

A La Carte

If you already have developed marketing publications for your department with UR and choose to produce your own publications or advertising, please be aware of the following:

Publications
UR can assist you at any point in the production process of your materials. Remember, working with UR’s staff is a free service to you – you pay only for printing and any other outside vendor services.

Following are some of our offered services, guidelines and advice:

Graphic identity (logo) guidelines
The graphic identity should appear prominently on every publication and follow specific guidelines. Please click here www.stthomas.edu/graphicidentity for download instructions and usage rules.

Note: Any printed piece with an incorrect usage of the graphic identity will need to be reprinted, at the cost of the originating department, with the correct usage.

St. Thomas campus names
Please check to ensure that all references to St. Thomas buildings are correct.

For example:
correct - Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas
incorrect - St. Thomas Chapel

For a list of building names, please visit www.stthomas.edu/maps/buildingname.htm.

Photography and photographers
UR archives a number of photographs of general campus scenes that you may use for your publication or Web site. For more information, contact Roger Rich, rarich@stthomas.edu or (651) 962-6803.

If you have an upcoming event that you would like photographed (that has newsworthy, historical or practical value for the university), contact Roger Rich two weeks prior to your event.

Postal regulations
Your publication’s design can dramatically affect its mailing costs. Prior to printing, bring a sample to the St. Thomas Service Center, the St. Thomas Post Office or a design specifications expert at the St. Paul or Minneapolis post offices. Their staffs can ensure that your publication will arrive in a timely manner and save you money by optimizing your use of postal automation.

Printing Services
UR has a list of reputable Twin Cities print vendors, including the St. Thomas Service Center, that can meet any printing need.

Proofreading
The university strongly recommends that all publications be proofed by UR. Your materials will be edited using the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual. Proofers also will check to see that graphic identity guidelines and other requirements are met.

To submit your publication for proofing, e-mail the following information to your marketing professional:

  • Document in Microsoft Word format
  • Deadline date (please allow one week for proofreading)
  • Any special instructions the proofers should follow
  • Your name and phone number

We ask that you and at least one other member of your department double-check names, dates, phone numbers and all factual information.

While writing your document, use the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual or the Little, Brown Handbook. For an abbreviated list of university guidelines for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and usage, as well as other St. Thomas-specific editing items, refer to the appendix.

Video shoots
If you would like to have a video produced or have an event videotaped, contact Ron Riley, rariley@stthomas.edu or (651) 962- 6818. Two weeks’ notice is required for taping an event. A custom video project can take from one week to six months, based on its scope.

Advertising
If you wish to develop ads independently, two elements must appear in each ad:
- The St. Thomas graphic identity (logo). Refer to www.stthomas.edu/graphicidentity for usage guidelines; and
- A method for the audience to contact you (Web and e-mail address, and phone – both 651 and 800 numbers)

Note: Advertisements should be approved by UR. For approval, contact Peter Breuch, marketing director, ptbreuch@tthomas.edu or (651) 962-6483. Allow at least three days for approval.

Discount ad rates
St. Thomas has negotiated contract rates with several publications in the Twin Cities. These rates often are substantially lower than those listed on rate cards. To receive these discounted rates, contact Peter Breuch before reserving ad space.
