Men's Track cruises to Friday's team title at Stout

Junior All-American Andrew Hilliard won three events to lead the St. Thomas men's indoor track and field team to first place at Friday's seven-team UW-Stout Invite.

The Tommies won eight of 15 events -- despite holding out several key athletes -- and scored 184 to runner-up Stout's 160.

Hilliard led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 200 meters with a winning time of 22.78; he led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 400 with a 50.24 clocking; and sailed 20-4 to claim the long jump.

Other St. Thomas winners were Ben Garbe in the triple jump (43-10 3-4); Aaron Johnson in the weight throw (47-4 1-2); Craig Benson in the 55 hurdles (NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.72); Andy Kummer in the 1,500 (4:08.01); and Bill Kretsch in the 3,000 (9:33.43).

UST runners-up were Carson Glad in the 200 (23.04); Jason Schwietz in the 400 (50.29); Andy Peltier in the 3,000 (9:39.63); Jarrod Gray in the high jump (5-10); and the Toms' 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

UST multi-event star Joe McCarney placed third in the 55 hurdles (8.33) and sixth in the 200 (23.45). He later placed first in Saturday's St. Mary's Invite in the pole vault (14-7 1-4).

The Tommies compete next Saturday in the Uw-Eau Claire Invite.
