Men's Track
4x400 relay breaks MIAC record -- 2004
The St. Thomas
men's track and field team broke its own MIAC record in the
4x400 relay at Saturday's non-team scored St. Olaf Qualifier
meet in Northfield, and in the process posted the second-best
time in Division III thus far in 2004.
It was the team's final tune-up before the March 5-6 MIAC
Championships set for Collegeville. The Tommies are favored to
capture the team title for the 20th time in the 20-year
history of the competition.
The Tommies' 4x400 unit clocked 3:16.97 for a 10-second win
and broke the school and conference record of 3:18.38 ran in
2003. Freshman P.J. Thiesen and juniors Carson and Cassidy
Glad and Jason Schwietz comprised the relay. The time is just
off the NCAA automatic time of 3:16.00 but is a virtual lock
to advance St. Thomas to the March 12-13 national meet.
St. Thomas won two other events, had five runners-up and four
third-place finishes despite holding out many athletes and
using many in different events.
Tom Hart won the 200 (23.13) and was seventh in the 55 hurdles
(8.55). Matt McLaughlin won the weight throw (52-9 1-2) and
was second in the shot put (47-8 1-2). J.J. Kirby was second
in the high jump (6-3 1-2); Shaun Sharpe was second in the 200

the triple jump.

(8.24), Steve Rajewsky in the 200 (23.51) and Corey Fusco in
the 1,500 (4:01.49).
