The St. Thomas men's and women's track and field teams capped their seasons with third-place national finishes in their respective 4x400 relays Saturday in the final day of the 2003 NCAA Division III Championships in Canton, N.Y.

The UST men's unit of Andrew Hilliard, Carson Glad, Robert Ware and Jason Schwietz broke the MIAC and school record in the 4x400 by a full second as the foursome clocked 3:11.12 -- just .04 of a second out of first place behind LaCrosse (3:11.08) and Lincoln (3:11.11). It was St. Thomas' fourth consecutive top-five NCAA finish in the 4x400. Hilliard, who missed graduation ceremonies to be in the meet, raced on all four All-America teams.

Coach Steve Mathre's team placed 17th in the team race with 14 points and had five All-Americans. Junior high jumper Joe Thomas had the MIAC's only top-two finish as he placed second in Thursday's high jump at 6-11.

Friday Results
The only Tommie men's runner to compete Friday was Jason Schwietz in the 400 meters, but he missed the finals. The Tommie men will run the 4x400 relay Saturday.

Thursday Results
Junior Joe Thomas cleared 6-11 in the high jump for second place. That was a season best for Thomas, a transfer from Purdue competing in his first Division III national meet. The Tommies are tied for fifth place in the men's race through day one.

St. Thomas men's and women's teams relax at the athlete' banquet

The Tommies advanced both their men's and women's 4x400 relays to Saturday's nine-team finals. The men's unit of Andrew Hilliard, Carson Glad, Robert Ware and Jason Schwietz has the fastest qualifying time of 3:12.31 -- just off their MIAC and school record of 3:12.30 set at the 2002 nationals. The UST women's team of Jill Ylonen, Mollie Hupp, Teresa Smock and Heidi Vogel have the third-best time of 3:49.19.

Both Tommie 4x100 teams failed to qualify for the finals. The men's team of Tom Hart, Roman Cress, Cassidy Glad and Carson Glad came in with the fastest time in the nation of 40.85 but were disqualified in their prelim heat. The women's team of Bastiaens, Ylonen, Alicia Wolff and Vogel ran 48.35 but took seventh in their heat.

Two other Toms failed to make the finals -- Hilliard ran 54.11 for seventh in his heat of the 400 hurdles, and Carson Glad ran 22.34 and failed to advance in the 200 meters.

TRACK RECORDS TUMBLE AS CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS

It didn't take long for a facility record to fall as the 2003 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships got underway at
St. Lawrence University's Merrick-Pinkard Track complex Thursday morning. And once records starting falling, they kept right on going as new facility marks were set in nearly every event and one NCAA Division III record was set on the first day of competition.
