The St. Thomas men's track and
field team had four firsts and six runner-up placings and took
second to St. John's in the MIAC Outdoor meet, which concluded a
two-day run Saturday in Collegeville.
Host St. John's cruised to the team championship with 225 teams
points. St. Thomas (178), Gustavus (94), Hamline (84), Bethel (70),
Macalester (60), Concordia-Moorhead (55) and St. Olaf (45) rounded
out the top seven.
The Toms scored in 15 events and received points from 18 different
athletes.
Junior Derek Marks won the discus (163-7) and sophomore Brian Sames
won the 800 (1:55.44). Sames also ran on the winning 4x800 relay
team with Logan O'Grady, Greg Dowe and Kyle Brandon in 7:44.20.
UST also won the 4x100 relay in 41.46 with freshman Chris Bradford,
Kyle Jepson, Phil Bastron and freshman Sam Moen.
Seconds were scored by senior Matt Schroeder in the pole vault (15-2
1-4); Joe Rohlfing in the high jump (6-2); Bradford in the 100
(11.12); Ewer in the 200 (22.21) and 400 (48.70); and Kyle Brandon
in the 1,500 (4:03.77).
Thirds were scored by Jepson in the 100 (11.13); Bastron in the 200
(22.55); Ewer in the long jump (22-11 1-4); and Mark O'Connell in
the hammer (167-6).
Fourths were scored by O'Connell in the shot put (47-9); Jepson in
the 200 (22.71); O'Grady in the steeplechase (9:36.27); Cameron
Roemhildt in the triple jump (43-9 3-4); Marks in the hammer
(164-8); and the 4x400 team of Bastron, Dowe, Sames and Ewer
(3:21.22).
Fifths were scored by Moen in the 100 (11.31); Boumeester in the
1,500 (4:05.47); Alex Weaver in the long jump (22-3 1-4); and R.J.
Strand in the triple jump (43-8 1-2).
Sixths were scored by Bradford in the 200 (22.86) and Neil Atzinger
in the 800 (1:56.99).
Sevenths were scored by Jonah Shermer in the high jump (6-2);
Bastron in the 100 (11.40); Boumeester in the 800 (1:57.61); and
Evan Schwartz in the 1,500 (4:07.80).
Eighths were scored by Will Schwalbach in the discus (138-11); Seth
Rosvold in the 1,500 (4:08.33); and Travis Birklid in the 110
hurdles (16.05).
