Championships in Northfield.

Coach Steve Mathre's Tommies scored in 21 of 22
events and had 34 athletes score at least one point as
they posted 221.5 points for a 33.5-point win
over St. John's (188).
 |
Carleton was a distant third (93).
It was the Tommies' fifth consecutive and 20th conference
outdoor team title in 22 seasons.
The UST seniors swept the MIAC
indoor and outdoor meets all four seasons.
|
St. Thomas won five events --
all three relays and Glad in the 200 and 400 -- and had five
runner-up placings and nine third-place finishes.
The win also let the Tommies pass
St. John's for second in the final men's MIAC all-sport
standings. Gustavus (92.5) held off St. Thomas (88) and St.
John's (87) for the title.
Carson Glad now has 14 career MIAC
Championships firsts (indoors and outdoors) in relays or
individual races. The junior hit an NCAA provisional qualifying
time in winning the 200 (21.37); set a meet record in the 400
prelims Friday at 47.15, an NCAA provisional time; and also
anchored the winning 4x100 to a provisional clocking of 41.65,
joining Jeremy Krentz, Cassidy Glad and Tom Hart. The Toms also
hit a provisional time in the first-place 4x400 of 3:16.48 with
P.J. Thiesen, Bryce Beckman, Cassidy Glad and Jason Schwietz.
In other Saturday scoring, seconds
were posted by Beckman in the 800 (1:52.95); and Peter Rosholt
in the hammer (168-2), both NCAA provisional marks.
Thirds were scored by Thiesen in the
400 hurdles (54.51), Thomas in the triple jump (45-9 3/4);
Cassidy Glad in the 100 (11.10) and 200 (22.00); Schwietz in the
400 (48.24); and Fusco in the 800 (1:55.54).
Fourths were scored by Ben Garbe in
the triple jump (45-9 1/4); Steve Groth in the 100 (11.30); Bill
Kretsch in the 5,000 (15:20.86); and Nick Schleder in the 400
hurdles (55.05). Fifths were scored by Hart in the 100 (11.34);
John Schwerkoske in the 5,000 (15:23.61); Chris Mattke in the
400 hurdles (55.09); and Thiesen in the triple jump (44-10 3/4).
Sixths were scored by Dan Everson in
the 100 (11.42), Bryan Limmer in the 800 (1:56.94), Hart in the
110 hurdles (15.67) and Tristan Christ in the steeplechase
(9:39.28). Sevenths were scored by Brian Hauge in the 1,500
(4:05.03) and Rosholt in the discus (139-9). Eighths were scored
by Schwietz in the 200 (22.61); J.J. Kirby in the 400 (50.19);
Will Hawthorne in the 1,500 (4:05.29); Jason Simmons in the
110 hurdles (15.81) and Travis Birklid in the 400 hurdles
(59.52).
Friday's Results
Just like in past
years, St. Thomas will enter day two of the MIAC Track &
Field Championships in second place on both the men's and
women's side.
In Friday's opening day action at
St. Olaf, the Tommies scored a first and three seconds and
totaled 66.5 points. St. John's had a big opening day and
leads with 87. Carleton is a distant third (33). St. Thomas
had 27 qualifiers in Friday's prelims in the 100 through 1,500
meters and both hurdles races, while the Johnnies qualified
nine in those same events.
Carson Glad broke a meet record
and hit an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 400-meter
dash prelims with a 47.15 clocking. That also broke a
17-year-old school record of 47.66 held by Rich Harkwell.
Jason Schwietz had the second best qualifying time at 48.34,
also a provisional time.
Last year, the Tommies trailed by
30 points after day one and won by 73. In 2002, the Toms took
a slight lead and turned it into a 64-point winning margin on
the final day. In 2001, the Toms took a 12-point lead after
Friday and won by 50.
On the women's side, the Tommies
are in more of a multi-team battle as they sit in fourth with
36. Carleton (52.3), Gustavus (46), St. Olaf (44), UST (36),
St. Ben's (24) and Concordia (20 2/3) are all in the chase for
the championship. St. Thomas is likely sacrificing at least 20
points as standout 800-1,500 specialist Brigid Power, the
favorite in those two races, is gone at her brother's wedding
this weekend.
The Tommie men won the 4x800 relay
in 7:53.89 with Bryan Limmer, Brian Hauge, Joe Hoovestol and
Corey Fusco. They got a 2-3 finish in the javelin with Dave
Diercks (182-10) and Ryan Collins (176-10). They got a 2-4-6
finish in the high jump with Joe Thomas (6-4 3/4), Mike
Draxton (6-2 3/4) and Jerrod Gray (6-0 3/4). They got a 2-6-8
long jump finish from P.J. Thiesen (22-2 1/4), Tom Hart (21-7
1/2), and Thomas (21-2 1/2). In the 10,000, John Schwerkoske
was fifth (32:57.66) and Sean Brenckman was seventh
(32:54.62). Matt Schroeder took third in the pole vault (14-2
1/2).
