2003 -- Men's Track and Field
Men's, Women's
Track blast to big wins at MIAC
The St. Thomas
track and field teams needed a big Saturday in Moorhead at the
MIAC Championships to keep their team title streaks alive -- and
they got it.
The Tommie men started the day trailing Gustavus by 30 points but
scored a whopping 174.5 points today alone for a 73-point win over
St. John's. Coach Steve Mathre's Tommies (221.5 points) won for
the 19th time in 21 seasons and fourth season in a row. UST, which
had seven firsts and seven runner-up finishes, scored in 20 of 22
events, with 31 different athletes scoring at least one point.
The Tommie women won for the 18th time in 19 seasons and fourth in
a row with a 56-point margin over runner-up Carleton. Coach Joe
Sweeney had 21 different athletes score points and they scored in
18 of 22 events, with six victories.
St. Thomas finished the school year with 10 MIAC team
championships, including the men's and women's indoor and outdoor
titles.
Both UST men and women seniors won the indoor and outdoor team
titles all four years in their careers.
Senior All-American Andrew Hilliard had a hand in four firsts on
the meet and finished his career with 16 MIAC championships
indoors and outdoors in relays and individual races. Hilliard won
the 400 hurdles for the third year in a row and joined an elite
group to win four consecutive MIAC relay titles (4x400). He also
ran on the winning 4x100 relay and was a surprise winner in
Friday's long jump.
Soph Carson Glad also had a hand in four victories -- he swept the
100 and 200 dashes, anchored the winning 4x100 and ran on the
first-place 4x400. His twin brother Cassidy Glas was second in the
100 and ran on the winning 4x400 relay.
Joe Thomas won the high jump and was second in the triple jump.
On the women's side, junior All-American Karolien Bastiaens broke
her MIAC outdoor record in the pole vault with a meet and stadium
record height of 12-5 1/4. That improves her NCAA automatic height
by one inch.
Senior sprinters Jill Ylonen and Heidi Vogel joined a select group
to run on four consecutive MIAC 4x100 relay title teams. Vogel
also won the 200 dash and had five top-five finishes on the
weekend. She finished her career as a 26-time all-conference
performer(top-three placing) and had 36 career top-five MIAC
finishes indoors and outdoors.
The UST women swept the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Freshman
Mollie Hupp also won the 400 meters.
May 9, 2003 -- Men's Track and Field
Men, Women Track
need big Saturday at MIAC meet
The St. Thomas
men's and women's track and field teams competed well Friday but
find themselves chasing other teams heading into the pivotal
Saturday events.
The St. Thomas women scored 57.5 points and rail first-pplace
Carleton by 3.5 points. Gustavus (36) and Concordia (25) also are
in the chase. Coach Joe Sweeney's team scored 26 points in the
long jump by placing 2-3-4-5-6.
The Tommie men, who have won 18 of the last 20 conference outdoor
championships, have 47 points and trail Gustavus (77) by 30 points
and St. John's (51) by four with a majority of events still to go.
Three of the Gusties' best events were Friday as they scored big
in the hammer, discus and pole vault.
In 2001, St. Thomas scored 57 Friday points and led by 12 into the
last day before winning by 50 points. Last year, UST scored 54 on
Friday and led by 11 before posting a 64-point win after the last
day.
Coach Steve Mathre's team qualified well with six in the nine-man
finals of the 100 meters, four in the 200, three in the 400, three
in the 400 hurdles, and two in the 1,500. The Toms also have the
best seed times in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, and should score
well in the 5,000, the high jump, triple jump and javelin.
Senior Andrew Hilliard came up big Friday with a first-place jump
of 22-0 3/4 in the long jump. Andrew Kisielius scored three points
by placing sixth. The Toms also scored 18 points in the 10,000
with a 2-3-5 finish by Brian Preus (31:34.45), Levi Severson
(31:34.78) and Sean Brenckman (31:46.56). UST also scored six
points with a third-place finish in the 4x800 in 7:53.68 (Kevin
Wright, Robert Ware, Bryce Beckman, Shawn Lohmann), and nine
points in the hammer with a third by Matt McLaughlin (152-9) and a
sixth by Peter Rosholt (139-9).
In the women's long jump, Jill Ylonen (17-1 1/4), Theresa Meath
(17-0 1/2), Kristal Grigsby (16-10 3/4), Heidi Vogel (16-9 3/4)
and Andretta Colley (16-9 3/4) placed second through sixth.
UST also won the 4x800 relay in 9:20.45 with Jenny Borofoka,
Brigid Power, Mollie Hupp and Teresa Smock.
They added seven points in the 10,000 with Nicole Gurgel and Beth
Magnuson placing 4-5. They also scored nine in the javelin with
Eria Wetzel (110-4) and Katie Reynolds (110-3) placing 4-5.
The Tommie women need to score well in Saturday's 4x100 and 4x400
relays, plus the triple jump, pole vault, 400 and 800.
