MIAC Outdoor Championships

The St. Thomas men's team scored a 50-point win
Saturday over runner-up St. Olaf at the MIAC Track &
Field Championships in Northfield. Coach Steve Mathre's
team, which started the final day with a 12-point lead,
won the team championship for the 17th time in 19
seasons.
UST scored 184 points to top closest pursuers St.
Olaf (134), St. John's (117), Concordia (102), Gustavus
(99) and Hamline (80).
UST senior Jeremy Heckman, who had a hand in 36 team
points this weekend, added his 18th and 19th career
conference gold medals as he helped the winning 4x100
and 4x400 relays and was second in the 100 (10.96) and
200 (21.97).
Sophs Justin Hall and Andrew Hilliard each had a hand
in 35 points. They both ran on the two first-place
relays; Hall won the 400 (48.56) and was fourth in the
200 (22.41); and Hilliard won the 400 hurdles (53.31)
and was fourth in the 100 (11.15). The 4x100, which
included Tom Hart, clocked 41.63. The 4x400, which
included Mark Bates, clocked 3:14.80. Bates also took
third in the 400 hurdles (54.98), and Hart was third in
the 400 dash (49.13).
Chris Milton had the Toms' other victory in Friday's
pole vault (15-3 1-2).
Aaron Johnson scored 15 points for the Toms with a
third, fourth and fifth in the discus (151-7), hammer
(148-1) and shot put (45-8 1-2). The Toms also scored 17
points in Friday's 10,000 meters with Levi Severson
(second in NCAA provisional time of 31:50.88), Nick
Maddox (third, 31:55.87) and Brian Preus (sixth,
32:04.10).
Other top-five placers for UST were Dan Slater in the
javelin (second, 182-6); Craig Benson (second, 15.09)
and Parker Gunderson (third, 15.63) in the 110 hurdles;
Ryan Kollmann in the 1,500 (third, 3:59.41); Joe
McCarney in the decathlon (second, 6,177); Andrew
Kisielius in the long jump
2001 MIAC Men's Indoor Recap:
Coach Steve Mathre's men's team won the 2001 MIAC indoor
championships, making it 17-for-17 all-time indoor team
crowns for the Tommie men. Heckman had a had in three
victories and UST won five events.
The UST men scored 158 points to hold off a strong bid
by St. Olaf, which tallied 140. Concordia-Moorhead
(114), Gustavus (81), Hamline and Carleton (68), St.
John's (61) and Augsburg (43) rounded out the top eight
in the 11-team field.
For the men, Heckman led a 1-4-5 finish in the 200.
Justin Hall, the 400 runner-up, took fourth in 22.68.
Tom Hart was fifth in 22.76.
The Toms swept the 4x400 and 4x200 relays. The 4x200
team of Parker Gunderson, Andrew Kisielius, Nick Stahly
and Andrew Hilliard ran 1:30.83. The 4x400 team of
Hilliard, Heckman, Hart and Hall ran 3:20.79.
Mike Gruba took second in the 800 (1:56.58); Aaron
Johnson was second in the weight throw (49-4 1-2) and
sixth in the shot put (44-4 1-4); and Kisielius was
sixth in the triple jump.

UST also cruised to the 2000 MIAC outdoor crown at
Hamline with 198.5 points, well ahead of runner-up
Concordia (117).
Returning MIAC outdoor champs for the Toms are Justin
Hall in the 400 (49.66); Ryan Kollmann in the 1500
(4:14.40); Chris Milton in the Pole Vault (14-4 1/2);
the 4x100 relay team, including Nick Stahly, Hall and
Jeremy Heckman (42.08); and the 4x400 relay team of
Andrew Hilliard, Mark Bates, Jason Villar and Hall
(3:20.02). Other All-MIAC returners from 2000 (top-three
finishers) are Craig Benson, second in the 100 hurdles;
Heckman, second in the 200 meters (21.65) and third in
the 100 meters (10.77); Villar, second in the 400 meters
(51.06); Bates, second in the 400-meter hurdles; Nick
Maddox, third in the 5000 meters (15:27.38); and
Hilliard, third in the 400-meter hurdles (56.01); and
Dan Draine, third in the 3000-meter steeplechase
(9:29.30).
