Power,
Thiesen improve NCAA provisional times
St.
Thomas junior middle-distance runner Brigid Power
and UST freshman P.J. Thiesen had good races on the
weekend to improve their NCAA provisional qualifying
times.
Power moved from 18th to 10th on the women's
1,500-meter season performance list in NCAA Division
III as she clocked a career-best 4:35.66 in a large
field of primarily Division I runners Friday night
in Atlanta, Ga., at the Georgia Tech Invite. Her
time was 27th out of 49 runners in the four
sections. That time will improve Power's chances of
reaching the Division III nationals in that event.
She already had a strong provisional time in the 800
meters.
Thiesen had a career-best 52.81 in the men's 400
hurdles -- the fifth-best time this season in
Division III -- as he won at Saturday's St. Olaf
Last Chance Meet.
In other Tommie men's performances, Joe Thomas
shared second in the high jump at 6-6 1-4; Corey
Fusco was fourth in the 800 at 1:53.80; Ben Garbe
was second in the triple jump at 45-5 3-4; and
Cassidy Glad was sixth in the 400 in 50.68.
There's one more Last Chance Meet scheduled next
Friday at UW-LaCrosse. The Division III nationals
are scheduled for May 27-29 in Decatur, Ill.
