Men's
Track breaks MIAC record for indoor 4x400
The St. Thomas men's track and field team broke an
11-year-old MIAC record and won a 20-team field in
the 4x400 relay at Saturday's Iowa State University
meet in Ames, Iowa. Several Division I and II teams
and top-flight unattached athletes competed.
The Tommie foursome of Andrew Hilliard, Robert Ware,
Carson Glad and Jason Schwietz clocked 3:16.74 on
ISU's 300-meter indoor track. Iowa State (3:16.95)
and South Dakota (3:17.94) were in the third heat,
and their time placed just behind the Tommies
overall.
The Toms' winning time converts to 3:18.74 for a
200-meter track time, which still betters Carleton's
3:19 clocking from the 1992 conference indoor meet.
It also meets an NCAA qualifying time for the 2003
national indoor meet.
The Tommies had several other top performances --
Roman Cress took eighth in the 60 meters (6.96) and
seventh in the 200 meters (22.18); Carson Glad took
11th in the 200 (22.54) and 15th in the 60 (7.09);
in the 600, Hilliard was eighth (1:14.21) and Chris
Mattke was 18th (1:16.59); in the 400, Ware was 10th
(49.35) and Schwietz was 18th (50.22); in the 200,
Cassidy Glad was 22nd (22.90); in the 800, Bryce
Beckman was 16th (1:56.38) and Corey Fusco was 17th
(1:56.60); in the 60 hurdles, Craig Benson was 29th
(9.04); and in the 1,000, Brian Hauge was 12th
(2:36.11).
At Friday's Eau Claire meet, a partial Tommie squad
outscored host Eau Claire 144-107. Tom Hart (6.75,
23.25) swept the 55 and 200. Jason Larson (8.77) and
Jason Simmons (8.83) went 1-2 in the 55 hurdles; Ben
Garbe won the triple jump (42-6) and Jason Peterson
won the long jump (21-5).
