Men's Track sails to 81-point win at MIAC meet
The St. Thomas men's
track & field team used depth to cruise to another team title at
the MIAC Indoor Championships, which ended Saturday at Carleton.
The Tommie men made it 18-for-18 team championships as they rolled up
214 points, 81 better than runner-up Hamline (133) and easily ahead of
other close pursuers St. Olaf (126), Gustavus (99) and St. John's
(80).
The Tommies won two events Friday -- Roman Cress in the 55 dash and
Craig Benson in the 55 hurdles -- in building a 50-point team lead.
They added three Saturday victories as Joe McCarney won the pole vault
(14-7 1-2) and led off the winning 4x200 relay (1:30.94) with Steve
Rajewsky, Jason Villar and Tom Hart; and UST took the 4x400 in an NCAA
provisional qualifying time of 3:20.15 with Carson Glad, Jason
Schwietz, Justin Hall and Andrew Hilliard.
Glad and Schwietz placed 2-4 in the 200 in 22.75 and 22.82; the Toms
scored 20 points in the 3,000 with a 2-4-5-6 finish of Andy Kummer
(8:47.37), Nic Maddox (8:47.78), Nate Coleman (8:51.17) and Levi
Severson (8:53.08); Bryce Beckman and Corey Fusco went 4-6 in the 800
in 1:57.44 and 1:57.72; Ben Garbe was fourth in the tiple jump (43-7);
and Aaron Johnson placed fourth in the shot put (48-0).
The 18-for-18 streak is the third longest active streak of conference
championships in all of Division III.

Men's Track opens
50-point lead at MIAC meet
The St. Thomas men's
track & field team scored two firsts and five seconds and took an
impressive lead in Friday's first day of the MIAC Indoor
Championships, hosted by Carleton College in Northfield.
The Tommies, looking to win the team title for the 18th year in a row,
rolled up 129 team points Friday and lead closest pursuers Hamline
(79), St. Olaf (67) and Gustavus (47) with 11 of 20 events completed.
Saturday's events begin at 11:30 a.m. Events are scored with eight
placewinners -- 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
UST winners Friday were junior All-Americans Roman Cress (6.40 in 55
dash) and Craig Benson (7.69 in 55 hurdles). The Tommies also scored a
whopping 26 points in the 5,000 meters as they placed 2-3-4-5-6 with
Levi Severson and Nate Coleman (15:06), Nic Maddox (15:10) and Brian
Preus and Sean Brenckman (15:15).
The Tommies also scored 21 points in the 400 as they placed 2-3-5-7-8,
led by runner-up Andrew Hilliard (50/05), Jason Schweitz (50.34) and
fifth-place Carson Glad (51.21).
Other Friday runners-up were Bryce Beckman in the 600 (1:14.23), Andy
Kummer in the 1,500 (4:00.41) and Andrew Kisielius in the long jump
(21-9).

"The younger guys are finding out what it means to be
a part of the UST track and field
tradition, and several have already stepped up to the challenge of keeping that tradition alive,"
said junior Andrew Hilliard. "These strong, younger athletes, along with
solid upperclassmen, combined with the strong recruiting class we
usually attract, should combine for another conference championships next
year, he said. |
