Men's Track starts outdoor season
The
St. Thomas men's track and field team had athletes
at separate weekend meets to start the 2005 outdoor
season.
At the Friday-Saturday Duke Invitational in Raliegh,
N.C., senior All-American Carson Glad hit an NCAA
provisional time of 21.76 in the 200 meters and
placed seventh of 41 seeded entrants. P.J. Theisen
just missed the provisional standard of 54.00 in the
400 hurdles as he clocked 54.17. Cory Fusco
(1:54.41) and Bryce Beckman (1:55.15) also had
top-15 finishes. Dave Dierks threw 175-9 and placed
eighth in the javelin; Jason Schwietz (49.66) and
J.J. Kirby (50.58) ran well in the 400 and ran on
the 4x400 relay (3:19.05); Travis Birklid (16.44)
and Chris Mattke (16.46) ran well in the 110 high
hurdles; Jerrod Gray jumped 6-3 1-2 in the high jump
and ran 23.24 in the 200; Mattke ran 23.46 in the
200 and 56.65 in the 400 hurdles; Birklid ran 58:30
in the 400 hurdles; and Peter Rosholt threw 155-4 in
the hammer.
At Saturday's UW-River Falls Invite, Colin Sullivan
(15:58.25) and Kaleb Stromberg (16:02.04) went 1-2
in the 5,000 meters; Will Hawthorne was second
(4:12) and Jeff Goeden was fifth (4:18) in the 1,500
meters; Brian Welle was second in the 110 hurdles
(17.06); Nate Wagner was second in the triple jump
(37-0 1-2); Justin Nwadiashi was fifth (11.98) and
Dan Everson was eighth (12.17) in the 100 meters;
Scott Busacker was fourth in the 400 hurdles
(59.37); Derek Marks was second in the discus
(153-7); Andy Dauer was fourth in the pole vault
(13-2 1-2); and Mark O'Connell was third in the shot
put (43-1).
The Tommies will run next Saturday in Collegeville
in the Meet of the Saints.
