Men's Track
gets 4x800 school record at Drake
The St. Thomas
men's track and field team started well Friday at the Drake
Relays in Des Moines. In a competitive field, the Toms' 4x800
relay broke a 21-year-old school record in a fourth-place finish
of 7:36.10. Matt Boumeester (1:54), Kyle Brandon (1:55), Neil
Atzinger (1:54) and Brian Sames (1:51) comprised the relay.
The old record was 7:36.83 set in 1986 at the Drake Relays by
Phil Herbert, Addison Kilibarda, John Murray and Mark Defor.
The Toms' 4x100 relay crew of Chris Bradford, Joe DeFrance, Sam
Moen and James Ewer finished ninth (.02 of a second out of the
finals) with an NCAA provisional time of 41:65 that ranks ninth
thus far in Division III.
In Saturday's action, the Tommies placed seventh of 20 teams in
the distance-medley relay in 10:08.46 with Boumeester, Ewer,
Sames and Brandon. The Toms' 4x200 relay with Bradford, Kyle
Jepson, DeFrance and Ewer placed fifth in 1:27.76. UST also
placed seventh of 25 in the sprint-medley relay in 3:27.65 with
Brandon, Jepson, DeFrance and Greg Dowe.
Derek Marks placed 12th of 30 in the discus in 167-10.
In Saturday's Drake Alternative meet in St. Peter, UST had five
top-two finishes. Logan O'Grady won the steeplechase (9:44.56);
Evan Schwartz was second in the 1,500 (4:09.29); Brian Welle was
second in the 400 hurdles (57.86); Alex Weaver took second in
the long jump (22-2 1-4); and R.J. Strand placed second in the
triple jump (42-0 1-2).
Thirds were scored by Mike Connell in the steeplechase
(10:11.91); Mark O'Connell in the hammer (163-0); and Joe
Rohlfing and Cameron Roemhildt shared third in the high jump
(5-111 1-2).
Fourths were scored by Travis Birklid in the 400 hurdles
(59.29); Phil Bastron in the 100 meters (22.16); and Roemhildt
in the long jump (21-0 3-4).
Fifths were posted by Tim Barnaby in the steeplechase
(11:08.34); Bastron in the 100 (11.28); Brian Pink in the high
jump (5-11 1-2); and Weaver in the triple jump (40-6 1-4).
Sixths were tallied by Jason Mansur in the 5,000 (17;16.5); and
O'Connell in the shot put (46-8 3-4).
Sevenths were scored by Scott Smith in the 5,000 (17:17.42);
Chris Victor in the pole vault (13-11 1-4); Strand in the long
jump (19-7 1-2).
Eighths were scored Lem Berry in the 110 hurdles (16.11); Strand
in the 400 meters (52.28); and Will Schwalbach in the discus
(132-9).
The Toms host a multi-team meet Saturday at O'Shaughnessy
Stadium.
