Men's Track
has fast 4x400 time at Drake
The St. Thomas
men's track and field team had strong performances at the
Drake Relays and at Saturday's non-team scored St. John's
Invitational.
The Tommie 4x400 relay had the third fastest time among 32
entries in the preliminaries at the Drake Relays in 3:13.44 --
the third-fastest Division III time this outdoor season and an
NCAA automatic qualifying mark. The team of P.J. Thiesen,
Carson Glad, Cassidy Glad and Jason Schwietz won Friday's
prelim heat but didn' t compete in Saturday's finals due to an
injury. Also at Drake, Joe Thomas jumped 6-7 1/2 to place 11th
in his second-best showing of the season.
At Saturday's Johnnie meet, the Toms had three firsts, seven
seconds and nine thirds.
Tom Hart won the 200 (23.06), was second in the long jump
(20-1 1/2) and was fourth in the 110 hurdles (16.20). Brian
Hauge won the 1,500 meters (4:07.86). Matt McLaughlin won the
hammer throw (165-9).
Other UST runners-up were Nick Schleder in the 400 hurdles
(55.99); Bryce Beckman in the 800 (1:55.25); Ben Garbe in the
triple jump (43-9 3/4); Peter Rosholt in the hammer (162-8);
and Dave Diercks in the javelin (154-8).
Thirds were scored by Steve Groth in the 100 (11.43); J.J.
Kirby in the 400 (50.88); Travis Birklid in the 400 hurdles
(58.04); Bryan Limmer in the 800 (1:57.10); the 4x400 relay
team of Kirby, Steve Rajewsky, Shaun Sharpe and Chris Mattke
(3:22.79); Mike Madison in the long jump (19-7 1/2); Mike
Draxton in the high jump (6-1 1/2); Matt Schroeder in the pole
vault (14-5 1/2); and Rosholt in the discus (135-5).
Fourths were scored by Scott Busacker in the 400 hurdles
(58.73); Jeff Goeden in the 1,500 (4:09.99); and Jason Larson
in the long jump (19-5 1/4).
Fifths were scored by Jason Simmons in the 110 hurdles
(16.20); Sharpe in the 400 (51.38); Madison in the triple jump
(41-1 1/2); and Ryan Collins in the javelin (147-1).
Sixths were scored by Mattke in the 110 hurdles (16.49); Will
Hawthorne (4:13.52); Draxton in the long jump (19-2 3/4); Gray
and Kirby in the high jump (5-11 1/2); and Larson in the
javelin (146-9).
Sevenths were scored Rajewsky in the 400 (52.30), Larson in
the pole vault (13-1 1/2); and Joe Stradther in the javelin
(142-9). Eighths were scored by Kyle Fischer in the 100
(11.71); and Brad Hansen in the pole vault (12-7 1/2).
St. Thomas hosts its annual UST Invite Saturday at
O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
