Men's Track & Field third at
tough LaCrosse meet
The St. Thomas men's indoor track
and field team had several strong showings and took
third out of four teams in Saturday night's Don Bremer
Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse.
The host team, defending NCAA Division III champion, won
with 127.5 points while UW-Eau Claire (73), St. Thomas
(53) and St. Mary's (5.5) rounded out the field.
The Tommies won two races -- junior Andrew Hilliard won
the 400 meters (50.64) and senior Craig Benson captured
the 55 hurdles (7.84). UST senior multi-event standout
Joe McCarney had a career-best in the pole vault (3rd,
14-9 3-4) and also took fourth in the 55 hurdles (7.87).
The Tommies' fifth-place NCAA cross country team was on
display in the 3,000. LaCrosse's T.J. Lantzy won in a
fast 8:41.56 but he was followed closely by five Tommies
who took 2-3-4-5-7 -- Levi Severson (8:42.38), Nate
Coleman (8:42.45), Andy Kummer (8:44.04), Nick Maddox
(8:44.43) and Brian Preus (8:45.24).
UST also had a strong showing in the 400 meters with
seven of the top nine finishers. After Hilliard's winning
time, Jason Schweitz was fourth (51.58), Peter Bernardy
was fifth (52.65) and Jason Villar was sixth (52.86).
Other top showings for UST included Bryce Beckman,
second in the 800 (1:57.27); Sean Brenckman, third in
the 5,000 (15:34.9); Aaron Johnson, fourth in the shot
put (47-9 3-4); Ben Garbe, fifth in the triple jump
(43-7 3-4); and Tom Hart, sixth in the 55 (6.75) and
sixth in the 200 (23.65).
