wins Carleton Relays, gets 5 provisionals
The St. Thomas men's track and field team hit five NCAA
provisional qualifying standards and took first place out of 18
teams at Saturday's Carleton Relays in Northfield.
The Tommies' 13 top-three placings included victories in three
relays and three individual events. Coach Steve Mathre's squad
scored 130 points for the team crown. St. John's (125),
Minnesota-Duluth (121), Minnesota State Mankato (117), Gustavus
(79) and Hamline (62) rounded out the next five team spots.
The Toms' 4x400 relay hit the NCAA provisional standard with a
3:16.48 time that placed second, just .04 of a second out of
first. They are now the eighth-ranked school in Division III
this season. The Toms also captured the 4x100 relay (42.33, just
off the 42.00 provisional standard); won the 4x200 (1:29.81);
and took fourth in the sprint medley relay (3:42.70).
Freshman Joe DeFrance hit the NCAA provisional time with a
second-place finish in the 100 meters (10.80) in a field of 37.
DeFrance also took first in the 200 meters in 21.87 in a field
of 40, just off the 21.87 provisional standard. Freshman James
Ewer ran 10.87 for third and just missed the provisional time in
the 100 meters.
Junior Derek Marks improved his NCAA provisional mark in the
discus as he won in 172-0, which ranks sixth in Division III
this season.
Junior P.J. Theisen improved his provisional time as he won the
400 hurdles in 53.51 in a field of 24, the seventh-best D-III
time this season. Theisen also ran on the winning 4x400 and took
second in the 110 hurdles (15.12).
Senior Peter Rosholt took third in the hammer throw in 171-0,
just a shade under his season best which already met the
provisional standard.
Other top-eight placings for St. Thomas were freshman Pat Jager,
fifth in the 400 meters (50.49); freshman Matt Boumeester, third
in the 800 meters (1:56.14); freshman Brian Sames, fifth in the
1,500 meters (4:01.92); freshman Zach Turner, fourth in the 110
hurdles (15.67) and seventh in the high jump (6-0); freshman
Jonah Shermer, fourth in the high jump (6-4); Andy Dauer, fourth
in the pole vault (14-5 1-2); freshman Kyle Jepson, seventh in
the 100 meters (11.12); J.J. Kirby, seventh in the 200 meters
(22.74); Brian Welle, seventh in the 400 hurdles (57.28); and
Matt Schroeder, seventh in the pole vault (13-11 3-4).
UST will have some athletes compete Wednesday evening at the
Macalester Twilight meet. Next weekend, the Toms will have some
athletes at the Drake Relays in Des Moines and some at the
Gustavus Invite.
