Men's Track wins Carleton Relays, gets 5 provisionals

The St. Thomas men's track and field team hit five NCAA provisional qualifying standards and took first place out of 18 teams at Saturday's Carleton Relays in Northfield.

The Tommies' 13 top-three placings included victories in three relays and three individual events. Coach Steve Mathre's squad scored 130 points for the team crown. St. John's (125), Minnesota-Duluth (121), Minnesota State Mankato (117), Gustavus (79) and Hamline (62) rounded out the next five team spots.

The Toms' 4x400 relay hit the NCAA provisional standard with a 3:16.48 time that placed second, just .04 of a second out of first. They are now the eighth-ranked school in Division III this season. The Toms also captured the 4x100 relay (42.33, just off the 42.00 provisional standard); won the 4x200 (1:29.81); and took fourth in the sprint medley relay (3:42.70).

Freshman James Ewer ran 10.87 for third and just missed the provisional time in the 100 meters.

Junior Derek Marks improved his NCAA provisional mark in the discus as he won in 172-0, which ranks sixth in Division III this season.

Junior P.J. Theisen improved his provisional time as he won the 400 hurdles in 53.51 in a field of 24, the seventh-best D-III time this season. Theisen also ran on the winning 4x400 and took second in the 110 hurdles (15.12).

Senior Peter Rosholt took third in the hammer throw in 171-0, just a shade under his season best which already met the provisional standard.

Other top-eight placings for St. Thomas were freshman Pat Jager, fifth in the 400 meters (50.49); freshman Matt Boumeester, third in the 800 meters (1:56.14); freshman Brian Sames, fifth in the 1,500 meters (4:01.92); freshman Zach Turner, fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.67) and seventh in the high jump (6-0); freshman Jonah Shermer, fourth in the high jump (6-4); Andy Dauer, fourth in the pole vault (14-5 1-2); freshman Kyle Jepson, seventh in the 100 meters (11.12); J.J.
