Schroeder,
Theisen lead Men's Track showing
Sophomores
Matt Schroeder and P.J. Theisen had strong
field-event performances to lead the Tommie men's
indoor track and field team in Friday's non-team
scored meet vs. Bethel and some UST alumni athletes.
St. Thomas held out several top athletes yet still
won 10 events with Schroeder ruling the pole vault
in 15-2 3-4 with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark
and Theisen capturing the long jump (22-6 1-2) and
triple jump (45-3 1-2).
UST had seven others firsts -- Jarrod Gray won the
high jump (6-2); Chris Mattke won the 55 hurdles
(8.56); Brock Stepan won the 3,000 (8:57.89); Joe
Hoovestol won the 1,500 (4:22.28); Corey Fusco won
the 1000 (2:36.08); Bryce Beckman won the 600
(1:26.06); and Jason Schwietz won the 200 (23.48).
St. Thomas competes again in two weeks at the Iowa
State Open.

CLASSIC
SHOWDOWN --
From an email sent to current St. Thomas recruits...
I wanted to give you a quick update on St. Thomas track and
field. First off, thanks to all who stopped by last Friday's
alumni meet at St. Thomas. It was nice to see many of you. I
enjoyed visiting and answering your questions. Secondly, I
want to re-cap for you an example of how special our program
really is. The Alumni meet (vs. Bethel College also) is a
chance for our alumni to reconnect with old teammates and
support the current program. This year our meet was extra
ordinary. Four alumni who graduated within the last eight
years joined forces to compete against our team in a rare 4x1
lap relay. Both teams arranged their order to match up well
with one another...and in true form - the race was neck and
neck -- with only 1/100th of a second separating the two teams
at the finish. Our alumni won - although a reasonable
objection could be made by the current Tommie team ...who may
have been infringed by an outstretched arm of alumni Roman
Cress -- all in fun of course. As a coach, it was tremendous
to watch 7 current and former St. Thomas All-American's race
head to head. Relay anchors Roman Cress and Conference MVP
Carson Glad - perhaps the two greatest sprinters in conference
history - battled around the second turn and dove for the
finish...both teams slapping high fives and flashing big
smiles when all said and done. I pulled freshman AC Udeaja
(Rochester John Marshall) aside and explained the company in
which he just ran - a future St. Thomas standout had just
joined an elite group of athlete's - past and present. This
story illustrates the tremendous pride and tradition of St.
Thomas track and field. Our program is not just about running,
jumping and throwing -- it's about creating life long friends,
doing somthing you love and experiencing tremendous success.
I hope we will include you in a similar story in the future!
