Junior All-American P.J. Theisen hit an NCAA automatic
qualifying time in the 400 hurdles to lead the St. Thomas men's
track and field team in Saturday's St. Thomas Invitational at
O'Shaughnessy Stadium.
St. Cloud State, Minnesota State Mankato and St. Olaf also
competed in the non-team scored meet.
Theisen took second in the 400 hurdles in 52.31, which ranks
first thus far in Division III. It's the second best time in UST
history behind Mark Warder's 52.19 clocking in 1998. Theisen
also won the 100 hurdles in an NCAA provisional qualifying time
of 14.74, and placed fourth in the long jump (21-10 1-4).
The Toms' 4x100 relay also had a provisional qualifying time of
41.90. Peter Rosholt improved his provisional mark in the hammer
as he placed first in 179-0.
Brian Sames (1:54.16) and Joe Hoovestol (1:55.43) went 1-2 in
the 800, just off the provisional standard of 1:53.60.
Other firsts for UST were recorded by Derek Marks in the discus
(147-0); Matt Boumeester in the 1,500 (4:01.94); and Cassidy
Glad in the 200 meters (22.42).
Glad and Kyle Jepson took 2-3 in the 100 meters (10.97); J.J.
Kirby was second in the 200 (22.48); Jaes Ewer was second in the
long jump (22-4 1-4); Kyle Brandon was second in the 1,500
(4:04.21); Zach Turner (15.41) and Brian Welle (15.94) took 2-3
in the 110 hurdles; Logan O'Grady (10:02.70) and Rorak Hooten
(10:19) took 2-4 in the steeplechase; Mike Draxton placed fourth
in the high jump (6-4 3-4); Matt Schroeder took third in the
pole vault (15-1); Andy Dauer placed fifth in the pole vault
(14-1 1-4); Mark O'Connell was fifth in the hammer (149-4); and
Ian McLaughlin (141-11), Joe Stadther (141-5) and Lem Berry
(138-11) took 3-4-5 in the javelin.
St. Thomas hosts the MIAC Championships May 12-13.
