Course Description:
This course explores the problem of religious beliefs in a secular society by focusing on the effects of the empirical and human sciences on the classical understanding of God. Considering original thinkers, such as Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche, and Freud, the course will explore the emergence of several types of atheism and the intellecutual defense of religious belief. Students will do a detailed reading of selected texts, which may include theological, philosophical, scientific, and literary works. Prerequisite: THEO 101 (or 102 and 103) and one 200-level or 300-level THEO course and PHIL 115
