"An Intercultural Experience"

1st place
Julie Bernhardt
SIT: Public Health, South Africa, Spring 2007

I was living with the Zikhali Family in Khula Village, South Africa.  In a rural village with few resources, like electricity and running water, sustaining a family is a difficult task.  Sithembile Zikhali, 27, with with baby Sifiso on her back, makes traditional Zulu amadavathi (bracelets & anklets) for a living when she is not cooking over an open fire, handwashing all of her families clothes and generally caring for her four children.

2nd place
Miriam Farrington
“View of the Vatican”
UST-Law, Italy, Summer 2007

This photo was taken prior to an audience with Pope Benedict XVI.  I looked up and this nun smiled and waved, so I snapped a photo.  She seemed to be enjoying watching the crowds of people in the streets below.

“Motionless”
John Cabot, Italy, Fall 2006

I captured this picture en route to class while studying in Rome, Italy.  On this particular morning, the tram was at this usual capacity- max capacity, with eager Italians starting their days.  In a simple attempt to capture the busy commute this day, I perched myself on the steps towards the back of the tram and took this picture.  With a larger zoom lens attached, the man centered in this picture must have been wondering this purpose of my aim.  When I look back at this picture I am reminded of the many times I squeezed my way through the open doors of the tram and stood motionless-shoulder to shoulder for my thirty minute ride from southern Trastevere to class, near Piazza Trilussa.

“Rush Hour”
Hiking the Pilgrimage Trail, January 2007

This photo was taken in Northern Spain while hiking the Camino do Santiago.  Two weeks were spent on the trail, with the goal of reaching Santiago de Cempostela located in the northwestern corner of Spain.  This small village is one of the many located on the trail.

“Eunoto Ceremony”
SFS; Kenya, Fall 2006

This photo was taken at a Maasai Eunoto Ceremony near Kimana, Kenya. The Eunoto ceremony is a weeklong community celebration in which an age group transitions from being warriors to being junior elders within the tribe. We were the first ever Mzungus (white people) allowed to be at an Eunoto Ceremony in this region. In the photo is Ashley Allison, a fellow student, and several Maasai mamas and girls.

Honorable Mention

“Viva la Revolucion”
Central College, Spain, Spring 2007

Captured in this photo is a French Art student in class at the Louvre in Paris, France. He is trying to reproduce the piece hung before him.

“St. Patrick’s Day”
Arcadia, Ireland, Spring 2007

With over one million visitors in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day the city was packed.  People came from all over the world to experience an authentic Irish St. Patrick’s Day.  It was a sea of green hats in every direction - even McDonald’s was sporting the tricolors.

“A morning at the Market”
CIEE, Cambodia, Summer 2007

A typical morning at a local market in Battambang, Cambodia- Rows of vegetables are arranged just a stone’s throw away from an assortment of exotic fruits and fresh fish.  Shortly before this photo was snapped, I bargained with this vendor in my very broken Khmer (Cambodian) for a bunch of carrots.  Despite the language barrier, and thanks to her steady patience, we settled shortly on an agreeable price.

Honorable Mention
Larissa Broten
“Woman” Cultures of India, January 2007

This photo was taken in an Indian village.  This woman was trying to see what or who we were.  They were interested but felt safe behind the door of their home.  Most of the woman stayed inside on our visit.  I liked the way it made the woman look and the colors.  It really demonstrated the roles of woman in India and how they are kept “in doors.”

Honorable Mention

“Peace amongst a crowd”
Catholic Studies, Italy, Spring 2007

This photo was taken at the remembrance mass for Pope John Paul II.  While in Rome, came to know many familiar faces.  This particular Dominican nun often would be sitting in the same area as us in St. Peters square.  While we did not know each others names, or likely even spoke the same language, there was community amongst those of us who came to recognize each other.

“En la Umbral de la Iglesia”
IFSA Butler, Mexico, Spring 2007

When traveling I don't normally like taking pictures of people, making it seem like they are some sort of spectacle to be gawked at.  But these girls sitting at the foot of the church had something so special about them that I couldn't just pass them by.  After snapping the picture, I poured all the pesos from my money pouch into their outstretched hands, to thank them for letting me capture their image on camera.  What I didn't realize was that the true mark made was the feeling of compassion their intent gaze left on my heart.

“Nap at the Louvre,”
IFSA Butler, England, Spring 2007

Right outside of the most famous museum in Paris, a man fell asleep in the hot sun.  I believe this picture reflects the relaxed French culture in a perfect way.

"A Sense of Place"

“Forever Vigilant,”
London MBA, England, January 2007

On top of Notre Dame, the gargoyle watches over Paris, the river Seine and the Eiffel Tower.  Far below, the square was bustling with tourists and Parisians.  The spectacular view from Notre Dame was worth the hour-plus wait in line on a brisk January afternoon and the slow, winding 400 steps to the top.  This was my last stop on a whirlwind three-day tour of Paris just prior to my departure for London via the Channel, which I barely made thanks to the impressive driving skills of my taxi/NASCAR driver.

2nd place

“St. Basil’s Cathedral,”
DIS, Denmark, 2006-2007

The brightly colored onion shaped domes, typical of Russian Orthodox architecture, have made St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow one of the most recognizable churches in the world.  Due to its location on Red Square and being adjacent to the Kremlin, this image has become synonymous with Russia from Soviet times, to the modern era.

3rd place
Baylee Reagan
“Birds on Loch Lomond,”
Arcadia, Ireland, Spring 2007

This photo was taken outside of Glasgow, Scotland one early morning.  The lake is called Loch Lomond, which is a lake at the start of the Scottish highlands.  I found this scene very peaceful and tranquil.  I was lucky to capture it.

Honorable Mention
Leigh Schneider
“The beauty of simplicity,”
Management 480, London/Ireland, Summer 2007

While studying abroad in Ireland, the group I was traveling with came upon a small Irish town. Outside one of the little street shops two young boys were playing hopscotch set up for them by an older neighborhood woman. As I watched them play I realized this was what I had always thought Ireland would be like and knew I needed a picture to capture the moment.

Honorable Mention
Erin Jungels
“The Invite,”
Study Abroad Italy, Fall 2006

This picture was taken on my first trip to Pienza in Tuscany.  When I looked up and saw just one open window with its long shadow creeping across the side of the wall, I felt like it was a hand extending an invitation to me to come inside.  Terraces are one of the symbols of Tuscany with the warmth and peacefulness of my picture really sums up my experience there.

Honorable Mention
Michael Devins
“A Bridge in Disrepair”
Arcadia, Ireland, Spring 2007

I would often spend time in the city centre walking around and taking photos.  I crossed that bridge every time I went into the city but didn’t enjoy the view often enough.  This photo serves as my favorite lasting memory of the O’Connell Bridge in Dublin, Ireland.

Honorable Mention
Stacy Sass
"Punda Milia" (literally “stripped donkey” in Swahili), SFS Kenya, Fall 2006

This photo was taken in Maasai Mara National Reserve in western Kenya. Maasai Mara, the northern portion of the Serengeti Ecosystem, is where the migratory animals travel to find greener pastures and have their young. This photo shows only a small portion of the over 1.5 million Wildebeest and 250,000 Zebra that come to the Mara each year. It was truly a sight to behold.

Honorable Mention
Logan Riordan
“Winter Wunderland,”
Roman Structures & Art, January 2007

This beautiful snow covered Swiss town nestled tightly against the magnificent and imposing Alps Mountains was captured while traveling by train from Zurich to Interlaken.  The picture is a true microcosm of the disturbed and astonishing beauty of Switzerland.

Honorable Mention
Krissy Schoenfelder
“If only we could stop time,”
Sacred Places of France, January 2007

This picture was taken from the railroad clock at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France.  The building in the center is the Louvre.  Musée d’Orsay was first a railroad station, but is now home to some of the most admired artwork in the world including collections from Monet and Van Gogh.
