Category 1: An Intercultural Experience

First Place - "Cairo from the 5th Floor"
By Mark Jahnke, Catholic Studies in Rome, Spring 2003

I was in Cairo, Egypt in the heart of the craziest city I'd ever seen and it was my first morning there. I decided to step out onto the terrace and take some photos of the city. It just so happened that the Egyptian woman cleaning the next hotel room over looked directly at me as I snapped the picture.

Second Place - "Poses"
By Amanda Lauseng, Catholic Studies in Rome, Spring 2003

This picture was taken during Carnivale, which is a Mardi-Gras type festival taking place the weekend before lent in Venice, Italy. Hoards of people come from all over the world in elaborate costumes while tourists with cameras take on a "paparazzi" type of role. These two people were a prime example of the festive costumes.

Third Place - "Guards at Tower of London"
By Amy Johnson, London Business Semester, Fall 2002

Honorable Mention - "Richard"
By Lisa LoMurray, Liberal Arts Semester in Paris, Spring 2003

Richard Deschryrer of Marseille looks at traditional products of the Provence Region of France. Richard, a close family friend, took me to this small Provencial town to see the sandstone quarries that are used in architecture throughout the region.

Category 2: A Sense of Place

First Place - "Canals of Venice"
By Lisa LoMurray, Liberal Arts Semester in Paris, Spring 2003

While traveling in Italy last spring with two friends, we spent two days in Venice. The first day we spent getting lost and stumbled upon this scene, which captures the essence of Venice. The rainbow "pace" flags hung from many windows in Italy. "Pace" means "Peace" in Italian.

2nd Place - "Ring of Kerry"
By Katie Ortman, NUI Galway- Arcadia, Fall 2002

My home-stay neighbor took me on the four-hour car drive of the Ring of Kerry, a peninsula on the west coast of Ireland. It was breathtaking! We had perfect weather, and an occasional traffic jam caused by sheep. It's my favorite picture, because it captures the gorgeous blue sky, brushed clouds, vibrant green, stones, sheep, and the ocean.

Third Place - "Castle Ruins, Aran Islands"
By Katie Ortman, Arcadia-NUI Galway, Fall 2002

Castle ruins were one of my many favorites of my visit to Ireland? so intriguing, mysterious, and historical. And so many! I loved to be able to explore the ruins. These ruins are on the Aran Islands. Myself, and five of my girlfriends hired bikes to explore the island. Climbing on those ruins offered a better view of the island.

Honorable Mention - "Assisi: Off the Tourist Path"
By Brittany Oliver, Pilgrimage to Italy, January 2003

While in Assisi on the J-term St. Francis Pilgrimage, I decided to explore some quieter areas in hopes of taking away something that not every tourist takes the time to see. When I came to this street of houses, I felt like I was able to experience for just a moment what it would be like to call Assisi home instead of a tourist destination. It is this feeling of belonging in a different culture versus seeing it from an outside view that makes traveling worthwhile for me.
