VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a robust discussion tool that provides the ability to have audio and visual discussion forums. With VoiceThread, instructors and students can discuss, dialogue, debate, and disseminate information using their voice, images, video and text!

How do I access VoiceThread?

All University of St. Thomas faculty and students already have a VoiceThread account because of its integration with Blackboard. Anyone wishing to use VoiceThread needs to be signed into Blackboard and then can access a VoiceThread created module or assignment.    

For Students: Access to VoiceThread

Note: Your instructor must first setup the VoiceThread module or assignment in Blackboard.

  1. Login to Blackboard
  2. Navigate to your course
  3. Click on the VoiceThread module or assignment that the instructor created

Students can now view the VoiceThread and add their own comments in response. Students can also add content such as images, video, text and annotations on the screen. 

For Faculty: Setup VoiceThread in a Blackboard Course

VoiceThread is available in both Blackboard and Canvas. Follow the Blackboard instructions below or go to our Canvas instructions here.  

  1. Login to Blackboard

  2. Navigate to your course

  3. Make sure EDIT mode is turned ON from the upper right-hand corner
    Verify that Blackboard's EDIT mode is set to: ON.

  4. Click on "Build Content" and Select "VoiceThread"
    To add VoiceThread in Blackboard, click "Build Content" and then select "VoiceThread"

  5. Create a name for your VoiceThread and choose the settings. (our example is "Class VoiceThreads")

  6. It will bring you back to the previous screen, click on the newly created VoiceThread link.
    Click on the VoiceThread Link in your course.

  7. Select the type of VoiceThread tool you want to set up. Course View is the most common. It puts all your VoiceThreads in one place.

  8. Create a VoiceThread by uploading a PowerPoint, a video, an image or document.

  9. Then Comment on your VoiceThread so others can interact with it! 

For Faculty: Setup VoiceThread in a Canvas Course

  1. Login to Canvas
  2. Navigate to your course
  3. Go to Modules and click the + sign on the the right side of the screen.
  4. Select External Tool from the drop-down list
  5. Scroll down the list to find VoiceThread and click to select it. Optional:you can rename "VoiceThread" to something more unique. To do so, simply click the gear icon and choose Edit. Note: This will not be visible to students until it is Published.
  6. Back in the Canvas view, click on the VoiceThread just made.
  7. On the next screen, choose how you want VoiceThread to be linked in your Canvas Course Site. Click the icon for more information about that method.
  8. Students clicking on the link will be taken to that view of VoiceThread in your course.
