Intern Positions
STAR is divided into fourteen intern positions, a "Think Tank" which represents various clubs on campus, and a general STAR committee that anyone is welcome to join. It is each intern's duty to maintain six office hours a week in the STAR office, attend a weekly board meeting, meet with the President and advisors, and work with other interns to program events. Each intern must attend training programs sponsored by the Department of Campus Life.
President
The president is the link between STAR and the administration. The president attends meetings with the administration and other student leaders. The intern also runs the weekly STAR meetings and makes sure that the STAR interns have all the resources they need to do their programming and other various duties. He/she helps where needed and keeps the group strong and running!
Internal Relations
The internal relations intern is in charge of the internal affairs of STAR. The intern makes sure that everything within the STAR office is running smoothly. The internal relations intern is also part of the executive board of STAR, and helps to coordinate STAR retreats, parties, and board events such as root beer floats in the quad and finals feed. The Internal Relations Intern takes minutes and distributes them at every meeting, plans the weekly agendas at the meetings and coordinates the intern reports. The intern is also in charge of office upkeep, buying supplies, voicemails and the STAR calendar.
Finance
The finance intern is a member of the STAR executive board, and is responsible for creating the STAR budget each semester and managing the funds spent by each intern. It is the responsibility of the finance intern to create bi-monthly budget reports describing the spending of STAR funds, and to insure that the money is spent responsibly. The intern sits in on both STAR meetings and USG budget meetings to analyze and understand the distribution of student activity fees.
Community Relations
The community relations intern is in charge of creating press releases for all events sponsored by STAR and helping to get the name of STAR out to the St. Thomas community. The intern community relations intern is also part of the executive board of STAR, and also maintains the STAR website, creates pamphlets and newsletters, and works on new initiatives. The community relations intern sits on USG as the STAR representative and works to create and maintain strong relationships between STAR and other student clubs and organizations.
Advertising
The two advertising interns share information regarding upcoming STAR events with the St. Thomas community. It is the goal of each advertising intern to find a method of advertising that is most attention-grabbing for that particular event. The interns work with Adobe Photoshop to create posters and other advertisements. They also use creative advertising methods such as table tents, atrium banners, free handouts, and creative advertising displays.
Programming
The six programming interns work together to plan, implement and evaluate all on and off campus events. These interns are responsible for communicating with each other, other STAR interns and advisors, and other campus departments. They also work cooperatively with STAR's community relations and advertising interns to publicize events, along with the Box Office and Expeditions to sell or distribute tickets and sign-ups to events.
Lectures
The lectures intern is the chair of the University Lectures Committee and is responsible for bringing speakers to campus to present on various educational and entertaining topics. The committee is comprised of many appointed students (including the lectures intern), faculty, and a few students who apply to be on the committee. Past lectures have included Patch Adams, Al Franken, Soledad O’Brien, Scott Hamilton, and many more. The chair of the committee is responsible for booking the speakers and working with agents, as well as facilitating the committee in its choice of speakers.
Tommies After Dark
The two Tommies After Dark interns are responsible for overseeing the "Tommies After Dark" program, which occurs every Saturday night from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. in one of the university’s venues. Some of these events may include card game tournaments, crafts, video game tournaments, and many other things. They also work with STAR advertising and community relations interns to publicize Tommie After Dark events.
FANAMANIAC
The FANAMANIAC intern plans, implements and evaluates spirit initiatives for St. Thomas home athletic events. They order and manage distribution of items that promote Tommie spirit. The intern works with other student clubs and organizations to co-sponsor events. They also work with STAR advertising and community relations interns to publicize FANAMANIAC events.
