2014 Staff Appreciation Breakfast Highlights
The Nonexempt Staff Appreciation Breakfast was a great success! We would like to thank everyone who helped make the event possible: Jerry Sweeney and the Dining Services staff, Steve Uhls and his staff from the Physical Plant, Tony Erickson and the UST Bookstore staff, and our IRT techs for helping with the presentation.
We would also like to thank President Sullivan, Father Malone, and John Bannigan for taking part in our presentation. The Summit Singers entertained us and gave us a very bright start to the morning. We had a large attendance and received many warm, positive remarks afterwards. It is a highlight of our year to host the breakfast for our colleagues.
During the breakfast, we were delighted to announce the 2014 NESC Appreciation Award recipient--Nancy Bruggeman from OCB. She was nominated by Dr. Kenneth Goodpaster and Carol Wilkie. Other nominees this year included Henry Radford Bishop, Becky Chinn, Alex Kisitu, and Pat Quale. Here are some brief highlights from Nancy's nomination letters:
Nancy is a colleague, a friend and a mentor – representing all that is good and humble about the human spirit. She is a model of selfless service, consistent in her kindness towards and understanding of others. She embodies the mission of St. Thomas in the way she treats others.
Nancy is thorough and knowledgeable about her job. She continually teaches others as she does her work. She is patient and embodies service. She is quiet and humble and puts others before herself. She bring a vibrant and upbeat attitude to her work and she anticipates what is needed to bring projects to successful completion. Nancy’s supervisors and co-workers often seek her out for her candid and perceptive advice.
She displays a prayerful demeanor, flexibility, thoughtfulness, joy for her work and patience with others. Nancy seeks ways to personally help others, genuinely caring for people. She sends encouraging notes, speaks encouraging words when others are in crisis. Nancy’s warmth, positivity, caring and compassion are all parts of her personality that I respect greatly. These traits, coupled with her competence, make her a true treasure and invaluable to our team.
Family and friends make up the center of Nancy’s outside activities, and she is an ardent Tommie sports fan – especially basketball, football, and volleyball. Nancy volunteers regularly with Loaves and Fishes and at UST activities – for example, commencements, and staffing guests lectures. She supports the activities of the Luann Dummer Center and the Selim Center, and has participated in nearly 20 leadership academy offerings over years she has been here.
Nancy is a role model for staff, faculty, and students – regularly receiving compliments for her positive attitude, sensitivity, and graciousness. She clearly fosters a community of respect and dignity around her.
She is a highly contagious carrier of mission-centered spirit and is a true gift to the University.
Father Malone helped us thank all of the UST retirees for their service to the university. We said good-bye to the outgoing NESC members Dede Hering, Barb Joynson, Lisa Keiser, Julie Kimlinger, and Ann Schiffer. We also welcomed the new and re-elected council members: Chiara Babcock, Debbie Cattoor, Corey Getchell, Pa Nhia Lee, Amy Petruck, Sarah Ramler, Ann Serdar, and Megan Smith.
(Editor's note: Subsequently, we learned that Corey Getchell has accepted a new position at UST and will be unable to continue on with the non-exempt staff council – now that he is an exempt employee. Replacing Corey will be Lori Seaver. Congratulations to Corey and welcome Lori!)
We wrapped up the event by announcing all of the door prize winners and silent auction highest bidders. Thank you to everyone who bid on the silent auction items--all of the proceeds go to the NESC Study Abroad Scholarship fund.
