Lay M.Div. Admissions Requirements

Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Admission Requirements: Lay Program

All candidates for admission must provide the following documentation when applying:

  1. Original transcripts of all college or graduate work sent directly from the academic institution to the chair of the Admissions Committee, showing an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited seminary, college, or university and a cumulative GPA of 2.3*

  2. A completed general application form with non-refundable application fee

  3. The University of St. Thomas Information Sheet

  4. Miller Analogies Test scores or Graduate Record Examination scores of testing completed within the past 18 months

  5. Undergraduate study in philosophy and theology, normally 24 credits in philosophy and 12 credits in theology*

  6. A written psychological evaluation provided by a qualified professional covering the following areas: emotional and intellectual maturity, self-concept and ego-strength, ability to relate to others and to work cooperatively with them, ability to deal with abstract concepts and principles, attitudes toward sexuality, and authority and motivation for aspiring to pastoral ministry

  7. Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can thoroughly assess the applicant's suitability for ministry and ability to pursue a professional graduate degree

  8. An interview with the Admissions Committee

All applications must be received by the chair of the Admissions Committee by June 30.  This makes it possible for the Admissions Committee to interview each candidate in July or August.


*The school offers options for fulfilling prerequisites in philosophy and theology.  Students who have not completed the baccalaureate degree and need to fulfill the other prerequisites may do so through an individualized program developed in cooperation with the University of St. Thomas.
