Master of Arts in Theology (MAT) Degree Requirements

Students may choose either the generalist or specialist option.

Generalist Option

  1. Six core courses (18 credits).
  2. Six electives (18 credits).
  3. Portfolio of four research papers written for courses taken by the student.
  4. Reading proficiency in one foreign research language by the time the student has completed 18 credits in the program; proficiency is defined as the ability to read and translate a theological text, whether a primary or a secondary source.
  5. Comprehensive examinations.

Specialist Option

  1. Six core courses (18 credits).
  2. Five electives, at least four of which are in an approved area of specialization (15 credits).
  3. Reading proficiency in one foreign research language by the time the student has completed 18 credits in the program; proficiency is defined as the ability to read and translate a theological text, whether a primary or a secondary source.
  4. Comprehensive examinations.
  5. Thesis (3 credits).

The Core Courses are:

  1. Survey of Old Testament or New Testament
  2. Patristics
  3. Eucharist
  4. Theology of the Church
  5. Christian Theology of God
  6. Moral Theology

Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the program.
