Seminary Formation Program

If you have applied and been accepted as a seminarian by the bishop of your diocese or religious superior, you may then begin the seminary application process. The formation program for a diocesan priest requires a four-year undergraduate degree, as well as four subsequent years of study focused specifically on formation for priesthood. Depending on where you enter the formation process, The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity offers two programs for seminary candidates:

If you have completed an undergraduate degree without attending a college seminary...

you begin a preparatory program known as Pre-Theology. This is a two-year program at The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity which provides the necessary study of philosophy required before begining the Theology Program.

If you have completed college seminary or a pre-theology program...

you begin the formal study of theology and preparation for priesthood in our Theology Program. Often referred to as "major seminary," this is the primary work of The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity.

Please see Seminary Admissions for information about the seminary application process.
