Father McDonough has been the pastor of the Church of St. Peter Claver in St. Paul since 1990. He has served the archdiocese as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia since 1991.
Following ordination, he served as associate pastor at St. Richard in Richfield and Our Lady of Guadalupe in St. Paul. He was rector of St. John Vianney college seminary from 1987-1990 and Chancellor and Episcopal Vicar for the archdiocese from 1987-1991. Fr. McDonough received his licentiate and doctorate in Canon Law in 1986-1987 from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
The committee chose Father McDonough for his outstanding service as a parish pastor and his effective archdiocesan leadership, especially his contributions in addressing the complex human and legal issues of clerical sexual misconduct in the Church, both locally and nationally.
