Msgr. Patrick J. Hessian is retired but continues his service to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis by assisting in parishes. Following ordination, he served for ten years as associate pastor at St. James Church in St. Paul. He was then called to active duty to the 1st Armor Division at Fort Hood, Texas. Subsequently he served as chaplain in Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. He received a masters of arts from the University of Kansas in communications and human relations, and a masters of arts in liberal studies from Georgetown University. After a number of chaplaincy assignments, he was appointed chief of chaplains for the U.S. Army in 1982 with the rank of major general.
The committee chose Msgr. Hessian for his long and dedicated service to those in the military and their families, as well as his service to the Church in diocesan leadership and parish ministry.
