Job Search Timetable for Sociology Majors

This timetable is designed to provide sociology students with some idea of how to use their time to prepare for a job search. Please note that it is merely a suggested timetable; some students will find a need to vary the order of events.

August/September

(12 months prior

to employment)

If you have not already obtained an internship in your Junior year, locate an internship position in your chosen field.

Learn about services available through Counseling and Career Services at UST.

Meet with a Career Specialist to clarify your career goals for graduate school or the job market.

Attend applicable career programs offered by the Sociology Department, sociology clubs, and Counseling and Career Services.

In September, inquire about organizations who will be recruiting at UST through the Counseling and Career Services office. If the organizations fit your occupational needs, then sign up in mid September for the Orientation to On-Campus Recruiting seminar.

Begin developing a resume and basic cover letter. There are peer advisors on hand in the Resource Center to critique your job search correspondence.

October

(11 months prior

to employment)

Begin identifying references and ask them to prepare a letter of recommendation for you.

Interview with on-campus recruiters if the positions posted fit your occupational needs.

See a Career Specialist to learn the most effective job search strategies (e.g. networking, cold calling).

November

(10 months prior

to employment)

Interview with on-campus recruiters if the positions posted fit your occupational needs.

Attend Career Day where you can meet with UST alumni representing various majors, career fields, and organizations.

December/January

(8-9 months prior

to employment)

Revise/finalize your resume and make arrangements for it to be reproduced. You may want to get some tips on resume reproduction from “The Resume Service” located in the Counseling and Career Services Office.

Attend career workshops designed for applied sociology majors.

Use the directories available at the Counseling and Career Services Resource Center to develop a list of businesses or organizations in which you have an interest.

Contact organizations to request application materials.

Sign up in early December for spring on-campus recruiting if the organizations represented fit your occupational needs. Find out about the procedures for interviewing with them.

February

(7 months prior

to employement)

Send completed application materials to organizations along with a resume and cover letter.

Meet with on-campus recruiters if the positions available fit with your occupational goals.

March/April

(5-6 months prior

to employment)

Research organizations with which you will be interviewing.

Follow any interviews up with thank you letters.

Continue to follow up by phone with the organizations of interest.

Begin monitoring the job posting summary available at the Counseling and Career Services office.

Attend the information session for the Human Service Nonprofit and Government Job Fair.

May/June

(3-4 months prior

to employement)

Maintain communication with your network of contacts.

Subscribe to the Counseling and Career Services Office job posting summary.

Revise your resume and cover letter if necessary.

Follow up any interviews with thank you letters.

If relocating away from campus, ask your career counselor for a letter of reciprocity to receive services at a college in the vicinity of where you are relocating.

July/August

(1-2 months prior

to employment)

Continue to monitor job vacancy listings.

Begin considering offers. Inform individuals associated with your job-search of your acceptance.
