Prospective Students: Major in Social Work

 

Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work Degree at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine University will be prepared to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities in the practice of social work. They will have achieved the ten Core Social Work Competencies identified by the Council on Social Work Education, our program’s accrediting body. At the completion of their degree, they will be eligible to sit for the Bachelor Level Social Work exam in any state.

A total of 12 courses (44 credits – the two Junior Field courses are 2-credits each) are required for the major along with four supporting courses (16 credits). Students are required to complete two Field Placements, a 200 hour Field Placement in their Junior Year and a 400 hour Field Placement in their Senior Year. It is important that social work course be taken in the order they are presented below. The box below contains a list of the required supporting (prerequisites) coursework for a social work major. Following that is the course work requirements for the major.
